Dal Bhaat Organic Unpolished Urad Dal Chilka (Split with Skin) – 450 g is the wholesome, skin-on version of urad dal — earthy, hearty, and brimming with nutrition. Unlike the white split version, chilka retains the natural green-black skin which is packed with dietary fibre, making it one of the most nutritious forms of urad. Grown on certified organic farms and completely unpolished, every grain is free from chemicals and artificial processing.

Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container after opening. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve freshness.
- Rinse the urad chilka well and soak in water for 4-6 hours to soften the skin and reduce cooking time.
- Drain and add to a pressure cooker with fresh water in a 1:3 ratio, turmeric and a pinch of salt.
- Pressure cook on medium heat for 12-15 minutes (about 4-5 whistles) until completely tender.
- Let pressure release naturally, then finish with a generous tadka of ghee, cumin, garlic and red chilli.
- Soak urad chilka for 4-6 hours, drain and rinse well.
- Add to a pot with water in a 1:4 ratio, bring to a boil and skim off any foam.
- Reduce heat, cover partially, and simmer for 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Cook until each grain is completely soft, then season and add a hot ghee tadka to finish.
- Always soak — the skin takes longer to soften and soaking ensures even, tender cooking.
- A generous ghee tadka with garlic is essential — it transforms the earthy flavour into something rich and delicious.
- Urad chilka makes an excellent high-fibre alternative to white urad — more nutritious, equally tasty.
- Can be mixed with chana dal or moong dal for a nutritious mixed dal.
